ᐅ Apple iPhone 17: Design and new features of the new release
The thinnest and lightest iPhone line yet, with changes you wouldn't expect
With just a few months to go before the expected release of the Apple iPhone 17, rumors and leaks have ignited my excitement as a fan of the brand. From my first iPhone 7 to my current iPhone 15, I’ve lived through every change in design, camera and performance, so I recognize when something can really make a difference. Now, with news of the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Air, Pro and even a possible Ultra, I feel like we’re looking at a generation that could redefine the standard for smartphones in 2025.
Record-breaking ultraslim design
What stands out most so far is the design of the iPhone 17 Air: just 5.5 mm thick and weighing about 145 g, making it one of the lightest phones on the market. I have a hard time imagining how that thinness will be in the hand, especially without a case, but it’s definitely a long-awaited change after more robust generations.
And how do they achieve it? Well, with premium materials such as aluminum + glass, and dispensing with the physical SIM tray. Everything suggests that Apple will bet heavily on eSIM, which allows a more compact chassis and, possibly, better water resistance.
iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max: photography to another level
On the other hand, the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max models are completely renewed on the back. It is rumored that they will leave behind the typical square module to adopt a horizontal bar, something that reminds me of the Pixel design, but with Apple’s elegance. There would be three 48 MP sensors, a telephoto lens with 10× hybrid zoom, and a LiDAR. That, along with the repositioning of the Apple logo at the bottom, makes me think we’re looking at a cleaner, more sophisticated image.
ProMotion displays across the family
If you’re looking for fluidity, you’ll be happy to know that the entire iPhone 17 lineup, from the standard model to the Pro Max/Ultra, would have LTPO OLED displays with ProMotion at 120 Hz. This democratizes an experience that was previously reserved only for the Pro models. Confirmed sizes:
- iPhone 17: 6,3″
- iPhone 17 Air: 6,6″
- iPhone 17 Pro: 6,3″
- iPhone 17 Pro Max/Ultra: 6,9″
I’m excited about the idea of having a screen without a notch and with reduced edges, thanks to Face ID sensors under the glass. Visually, it will be amazing and promises an even more immersive experience.
Performance: A19 Pro chip and state-of-the-art connectivity
In terms of power, everything points to the A19 Pro chip, with 2 nm technology and up to 12 GB of RAM in the Pro/Ultra models, while the iPhone 17 and 17 Air would carry 8 GB. If already the A16 and A17 chip were a good base, I imagine this new heart raising performance and power efficiency to another level.

Also discussed are:
- Wi-Fi 7 and C1 5G chip for ultra-fast and stable connections.
- Internal steam chamber in Pro models, for thermal control in intensive use.
In short, a combo designed to handle everything from video editing to heavy gaming without flinching.
Cameras and dual recording
Photography is bound to enjoy an impressive leap. The Pro models will have 48 MP telephoto lens along with a 24 MP front camera. One feature that catches my attention is the dual recording (front + rear at the same time), perfect for vlogs, video calls and network content. A powerful detail for the creators.
On the iPhone 17 Air, we will see a simpler configuration: single 48 MP sensor on the rear bar. But enough for excellent images in an ultraslim form factor.
Apple iPhone 17 Ultra Rumors
What many of us are waiting for is the confirmation of the iPhone 17 Ultra, which would replace the Pro Max. At around 8.7 mm thick, with a larger battery, advanced cooling and exclusive features, it would be the definitive flagship of the 2025 range. A top of the line for those who want the ultimate in mobile technology.
Is the iPhone 17 worth it? Here’s what I think as a regular user
After going through the most important iPhone 17 specs and leaks, I want to share with you my personal analysis on whether this new model is really worth it in 2025, especially considering its price and advancement vs previous generations.
Quick comparison: iPhone 17 vs previous models
Feature | iPhone 17 | iPhone 15 Pro | iPhone 13 |
---|---|---|---|
Chip | A19 / A19 Pro (2 nm) | A17 Pro (3 nm) | A15 Bionic |
RAM | 8 GB / 12 GB | 6 GB / 8 GB | 4 GB |
Display | OLED 120 Hz on all | OLED 120 Hz Pro only | OLED 60 Hz |
Design | Camera bar, thinner | Square camera module | Design similar to iPhone 12 |
Face ID | Under screen | Dynamic Island | Traditional notch |
Front camera | Up to 24 MP | 12 MP | 12 MP |
As you can see, there is a clear evolution in screen, cameras, design and especially in power and efficiency.
What prices are expected?
According to analysts, this could be the approximate price range:
- iPhone 17 Air: $899 USD
- iPhone 17 (base): $999 USD
- iPhone 17 Pro: $1,199 USD
- iPhone 17 Ultra: $1,399–$1,499 USD
And while it’s no surprise that prices are high, Apple has also added enhancements that justify (in part) that increase.
What do I like best about what’s coming?
- Fluid screen on all models: As an iPhone 13 user, this seems to me one of the most relevant changes. You no longer need to go for the Pro version to have 120 Hz, which translates into a smoother experience when browsing, typing, gaming and even watching videos.
- Thinner design and no notch: After years with the notch, seeing a full screen with Face ID under the panel seems like a dream come true to me. And the ultraslim design of the iPhone 17 Air gives it a premium aesthetic without feeling heavy.
- Camera and content improvements: As I create content on networks, the dual recording feature (front and rear) is a very attractive point. I also value the new 24 MP front sensor, ideal for better quality video calls and selfies.
- Assured power: Between the A19 Pro chip, the 12 GB of RAM in Pro and Ultra versions, and an improved cooling system, it is clear that the iPhone 17 is a monster in performance.

And what causes me to have doubts?
- Durability: With such a slim design (especially on the Air), I fear Apple will sacrifice ruggedness for aesthetics. I hope the new materials strike a balance between lightness and strength.
- Under-screen camera: Removing the notch sounds amazing, but I worry if this compromises the quality of Face ID or selfies. Apple is known for not taking steps backwards in experience, but with this new feature we’ll have to wait.
- High price: Although Apple maintains a strong ecosystem, it is true that buying the iPhone 17 could exceed $1,400 USD in its most advanced version. And that’s not counting accessories such as cases, charger (which no longer comes), or AppleCare.
Is it worth upgrading if you already have a recent iPhone?
- If you have an iPhone 12 or earlier → The jump will be very noticeable: yes, I recommend it.
- If you have an iPhone 13 or 14 base → It’s worth it if you’re looking for better screen, camera, and design.
- If you have an iPhone 15 Pro/Pro Max → I don’t see a need to switch, unless the design or dual recording really appeals to you.
What if I want to buy it as soon as it comes out?
Take into account the following:
- 💵 Compare prices between Apple and official resellers.
- 📱 Take advantage of refurbishment or trade-in plans if you have an older iPhone.
- 🛒 Consider the additional accessories you might need (charger, case, AppleCare).
- 🧾 Be well-informed about the differences between models to choose the one that really suits your needs and budget.
Personal conclusion
As an iPhone user for years, I can tell you that the iPhone 17 excites me much more than other recent generations. The new design, the improvements in screen and camera, and above all the leap in fluidity make it very appealing. I’m not going to lie to you: the hype is there, but it’s also clear to me that upgrading should make sense.
My advice is to think carefully about what you expect from a phone: content creation? fluidity? design? ecosystem? If you answered yes to most of them, the Apple iPhone 17 will be a top choice in 2025.
